What is that mysterious thing that makes a nation? Throughout the ages we have carved up swathes of land and made claim to them, clear Saturnian boundaries have been established, we’ve put flags, and called them our own. Many countries have a National Day and some citizens claim to love their country as they would a cherished child. People are even prepared to die for their country.
Jung makes numerous references to the psychology of a nation, saying ‘the soil of every country holds [a] mystery… there is a relationship of body to earth’.
Countries it seems are ‘born’ just as we are and have personalities the same as we do; that is why England is so different to, say, Spain or Iran. Whether it be called a ‘Fatherland’ or a ‘Motherland’, it would appear that the founding of a nation is a reflection of its astrological birthchart and can tell us so much about the nation’s psychological makeup. More people than ever are choosing to live in countries that are different from their birthplace, so what is it about a country that attracts them?
